At Earls Colne Primary School and Nursery, the middle phase consists of Years 3 and 4.
There are two classes in each year group.
Our two Year 3 classes are: 3CP taught Miss Curtis on Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Parish on Thursday and Friday; and 3MN taught by Miss Marson. In Year 4, Mrs Sercombe teaches in 4SE and 4FR are taught by Mr Fraser.
All four classes are supported by LSAs every morning and some afternoons.
Children are expected to read at home and discuss the text with a parent at least five times a week. Each term a reading challenge is set and the children who successfully complete this are rewarded at the end of term.
Spellings are set on a Friday and the children are tested, in the form of a dictation, the following Friday. Their spelling words are linked to the spelling rules that they have been learning in class.
It is important that the children practise their times tables (up to 12x12) and the inverse division facts as this knowledge is used in all other aspects of maths. The Government's expectation is that all children (by the end of Year 4) can recall all times tables facts within 6 seconds.
Maths and English is given out weekly and individual class teachers will let the children know when it is due in, in order for it to marked and returned.
Each term the children are expected to complete one Creative Home Learning task. However, they can do more if they wish.
