Phonics and Spelling
Phonics
What is phonics?
Phonics is one method of teaching children how to read and write.
It's all about sounds. There are 44 sounds in the English language, which we put together to form words. Some are represented by one letter, like 'b', and some by two (digraphs), like ‘ar’ in car or three (trigraphs), like ‘air’ in chair.
Spelling
In EYFS and Year 1, spelling skills and rules are taught through daily phonics sessions following our ‘Rocket Phonics’ scheme of work.
From Year 2 through to Year 6, the teaching of spelling rules continues using elements of the ‘No Nonsense Spelling Scheme’. Regular assessments track children’s progress and enable teachers to personalise spelling targets.
